While I agree that tournaments one of the fastest ways of making quick cash, you are not guaranteed to win and you also need 500+ to bet 100 each round. If you find a tournament that suits your combat style go for it. However there are other ways of making money.
One way of doing influence gains is raiding enemy villages and such, if you wish to fight militias and such. If you raid the village it will burn them up, so many force them to give up loot works better. Your relations with people takes a nosedive though since you are targeting commoners. #1.
